The panorama tour
The best of Marseille: from the Docks, through the old port, up to the Cathedral Notre-Dame de la Garde.
The tour starts in the La Juliette quarter. Modern and hip, surprises the former dock area, with spectacular buildings and shopping centres. The route then past the basilica Sainte-Marie-Majeure to the Old Port, whose basin extend far into the town. Always been an inherent part of the city, the bustling harbour can look back to 2600 years of history. Today it is a paradise for gourmets, travellers, soap makers, yacht owners and fishermen. During a brief stop, there is the possibility, to make photographs and films of the Old Port, the town-hall and the fascinating National Museum MuCEM.
The Palais Longchamp will be our next destination. The castle was created to celebrate the construction of the Canal de Marseille, which was built to bring water from the Durance River to Marseille. Designed by the architect Henry Esperandieu, the building was centered on the structure and elaborate fountain known as the chateau d’eau.
After the visit of the Palais Longchamp you will discover the opulent 19th-century Romano-Byzantine basilica occupies Marseille’s highest point, La Garde (162m). Built between 1853 and 1864, it is the landmark of Marseille.
